My preconception of Borneo?…………….Easy, - green and orange!
I expected Borneo to be a country boasting only green jungle complete with 'Wild man of Borneo' inhabitants……….Orang-utans. My experiences of the huge variety of pursuits, sights and sounds superseded all my expectations.
The most memorable part of the trip for me was
our visit to Sandakan, reached by internal flight from Kotu Kinabalu Airport. We
visited the Sepilok orang-utan sanctuary where we had opportunity to learn about
these animals within their natural environment and the various rehabilitation
programmes before trekking into the jungle to see them at their feeding posts. A
'banana bunch' of hungry, cheeky monkeys were very close behind!
The city tour was extremely interesting. We were driven through "Little Hong
Kong" shopping area to a local Kadazan village comprising of houses
supported on stilts over the river, where we were welcomed by residents with
open arms. The tour also encompasses the State Mosque, Chinese Temple and the
War memorial.
There is so much Borneo has to offer to satisfy
every individual travel criteria. The culture and history is fascinating, from
the religion and laws to the local dance and costume. A country of contrasts
with beautiful white sandy beaches, picturesque mountains including Mount
Kinabalu dominating the area of Kinabalu National Park, the lush greenery of the
jungle, the various nature reserves for garden fanatics and wildlife fanciers
alike!
One of the rainforests has a canopy walk 156ft above the ground with fantastic
views (if you dare look!)
The accommodation in Borneo is excellent, most hotels have their own Golf course
and spa, and a selection of top quality restaurants. What we also found of 'good
taste' was the local cuisine. (All these restaurants had to be sampled!) Malay
dishes are similar in taste to Indian/Chinese combinations and cost very little
for very substantial portions!
The people of Borneo are extremely hospitable, the friendly tour guides relish
in telling stories and tales of Borneo myths and legends, and where else will
hotel staff gather to bid farewell in song as you check out of your quality
accommodation?
A truly 'colourful' experience, not just 'green and orange' after all!
