Discover the magnificent temples and remote villages
of Burma (Myanmar) in style, while staying at the Governor’s Residence hotel in
Rangoon (Yangon) and cruising along the majestic Irrawaddy river aboard the
luxurious Road to Mandalay. The journey begins in Rangoon, home to the
magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda. Continue to the last royal capital of Mandalay and
embark on the Road to Mandalay for a 7-night cruise to Pagan. Lined with ancient
palaces and pagodas, the astonishing Irrawaddy river is perhaps the most
pleasurable way to experience Burma, to feel its pulse, live its legends and
understand its history.
Itinerary...
Day 1 – To Rangoon: Fly from London to Rangoon, via
Bangkok, with Thai Airways. (N)
Day 2 – Rangoon: Arrive in Rangoon and transfer to the Governor’s Residence for
2 nights. (N)
Day 3 – Rangoon: Full-day tour of Rangoon, including its wonderful colonial
buildings, Sule Pagoda, Kandawgyi Lake and the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda at
sunset. (B)
Day 4 – To Mandalay: Early morning flight to Mandalay. On arrival transfer to
the Road to Mandalay for a 7-night cruise on the Irrawaddy river. Afternoon tour
of Mandalay, regarded as the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning.

Day 5 – Irrawaddy river: After an early breakfast, visit a local village for a
walking tour. The ship begins its journey south in the morning. (B, L, D)
Day 6 – Pagan: Morning arrival in Pagan, where more than 2,000 temples and
pagodas are scattered over a large plain beside the river. Spend the full day on
a tour of the temples. (B, L, D)
Day 7 – Mount Popa: A full-day excursion to Mount Popa, believed to be the
sacred home of powerful nats (spirits). (B, L, D)
Day 8 – Pagan: After breakfast, join the guide to explore some of Pagan’s local
markets and a lacquer ware factory. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or
horse-drawn cart and explore this enchanting area on your own. Mid-morning, the
ship sets sail for Mandalay. (B, L, D)
Day 9 – Sagaing: Continue sailing up the river and visit the small Burmese
village of Shwe Kyet Yet. After lunch, take an excursion to Sagaing, considered
to be the living centre of the Buddhist faith in Burma. (B, L, D)
Day 10 – Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin): Visit Maymyo, a colonial hill station set high
in the mountains. Soak up the atmosphere with its cool climate, English-style
houses, colourful market and beautiful botanical gardens. (B, L, D)
Day 11 – To Rangoon: This morning, disembark from the cruise and fly to Rangoon
for an overnight stay at the Governor’s Residence. (B)
Day 12 – To London: Afternoon transfer to the airport and fly back to London via
Bangkok. (B)
Day 13 – London: Morning arrival. (N)
Domestic flights: Due to a restricted domestic flight schedule in Burma, the
journey may involve a number of early morning flights and requires check-in at
least one hour prior to departure. This Private Journey departs the UK on
Sundays.
