Discover Cuba Escorted Tour
Cuban culture & history • Havana & Trinidad • Las Terrazas community & Viñales valley • Overland tour • Direct Virgin Atlantic flights

Enliven the senses on this overland journey through Cuba, with its blend of colours, flavours, aromas and sounds. Discover the faded colonial grandeur of Havana and Trinidad, the delightful rolling countryside with its tobacco and coffee plantations, the historical sites of the revolution and the ever-present rhythms of the son and mambo styles of music. Cuba is changing fast, so this is a great time to visit while its exotic and distinctive style remains.

Itinerary...

Day 1 – To Cuba: Fly to Havana with Virgin Atlantic. On arrival, drive out to Las Terrazas in the western province of Pinar del Rio. Established as a sustainable environmental and development project, Las Terrazas provides an ideal introduction to Cuba’s countryside life and landscapes. Stay 2 nights at La Moka Hotel. (D)

Day 2 – Viñales: Full-day tour of the beautiful Viñales valley, its tobacco plantations and rounded limestone hills. Visit a cigar factory and take a boat ride through the Indian Cave. Return to La Moka Hotel. (B, L)

Day 3 – To Havana: Morning visit to the local community and the partially restored 19thcentury coffee estate. After lunch, drive to the capital and stay at the Iberostar Parque Central for 3 nights. (B, L)

Day 4 – Havana: Morning walking tour of old Havana. Afternoon panoramic tour in a classic American car, visiting Revolution Square and the rum museum (B, L)

Day 5 – Havana: Morning visit to the Bellas Artes Museum and Camera Obscura with a stop at El Floridita, home of the daiquiri. Afternoon at leisure, perhaps to relax by the rooftop pool or for an optional visit to Hemingway’s museum. Evening performance by the Buena Vista Social Club or Cabaret Parisien with dinner at the Hotel Nacional. (B, D)

Day 6 – To Cienfuegos: Travel to Cienfuegos via the Peninsula de Zapata. Take a boat trip through the mangroves and drive past Playa Girón, site of the 1961 invasion. Continue to the small city of Cienfuegos, with its distinct French influence. Take a tour of the city and have dinner at Cienfuegos Yacht Club. Stay overnight at La Union Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 7 – To Trinidad: Visit the Cienfuegos botanical gardens this morning. Continue to Trinidad for a 3-night stay at the Iberostar Grand Hotel, a restored colonial building in the heart of the old town. (B)

Day 8 – Trinidad: Morning tour of Trinidad, including the Romantic Museum and a visit to Casa de la Musica. Founded in 1514, Trinidad contains beautifully preserved colonial buildings, with hardly a trace of 20th-century architecture. (B)

Day 9 – Trinidad: Morning tour of the Valley of the Sugar Mills, dotted with ruins of large former sugar plantations. Visit the watchtower of the Manaca Iznaga plantation, a reminder of Cuba’s colonisation and slave trade, then have lunch before returning to Trinidad. Afternoon at leisure. (B, L)

Day 10 – To Santa Clara & Havana: Morning drive to historic Santa Clara, the site of the turning point in the Cuban revolution and see Che Guevara’s museum and mausoleum. After lunch, continue to Havana for 1 night at the Iberostar Parque Central. (B, L)

Day 11 – To London: Evening flight to London with Virgin Atlantic. (B)

Day 12 – London: Early morning arrival. (N)
Buena Vista Social Club: Performances are subject to change.

Discovery Tour: The tourist infrastructure in Cuba cannot be compared with that in most Latin American countries. Road journeys can be quite long, dining options are often limited and the standard of service can be erratic. Although our supplier uses some of the best accommodation available, La Moka and La Union are quite basic hotels. However, we feel that any deficiencies are more than compensated for by Cuba’s culture and scenery.

Meal Basis: (B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch, (D) = Dinner, (N) = No Meals

from £1720 per person (includes the special reduction if booked before 29th January 2013)
