It is universally agreed that the sight of the great Treasury
of Petra at the end of the narrow ‘siq’ is one of the most exciting experience
for travellers. The sense of discovering something very special is the same
today as it would have been for the great caravans that passed through Petra on
their way to the Orient. But there is more to Jordan than just Petra as the
visitor will quickly discover. Jordan has a rich and colourful history. Jerash
reminds us that Jordan was a prosperous Roman province and there are churches
from the Byzantine period and castles from the times when the Umayad dynasty
ruled here.

Itinerary...
We fly from Heathrow to Amman where we stay for three nights
at the 4 star Hotel Jerusalem. The first morning will be spent at the Roman
amphitheatre and the Archaeological Museum and in the afternoon we will see some
of the beautiful Desert Castles including the Azraq Castle which was used as the
headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab uprising. At Jerash we
discover one of the best preserved Roman sites to be found anywhere. Later we
will drive through the lovely countryside of the Jordan Valley and visit
excavations at Pella.
Leaving Amman we will drive along the King’s Highway to Mount
Nebo on our way to the Dead Sea where we spend one night at the 4 star Dead Sea
Spa Hotel Movenpick Dead Sea Hotel for 13 April departure.
On our way to Petra we will stop at the fine Crusader castle
at Kerak before reaching Petra where we will stay for three nights at the 4 star
Petra Panorama Hotel. Horses will take you along the mysterious gorge to the
Treasury of Petra and you will have time to explore this magical site on your
own – the Royal Tombs, Qsar el Binty and the Temple of the Winged Lion all await
discovery.
There will be a morning visit to Al Beidha, or Little Petra as
it is known, hidden away in the centre of the mountain.
One day will be spent travelling in four-wheel drive vehicles
to the romantically sited Wadi Rum with its associations with Lawrence. We will
find the route of the famous Hijaz railway, with stations, track and
rolling-stock left as they were by Lawrence and his Arab guerrillas. The Hijaz
railway was the result of a grand plan to transport pilgrims from Damascus to
Mecca in Saudi Arabia and opened to great acclaim in 1908. The line was also
used by the Turks to move troops and goods and it was for this reason that
Lawrence crippled the line during the Arab revolt and the line fell into disuse.
The final night of the tour is spent back in Amman before
flying back to London Heathrow.
