Beirut, with its million-plus inhabitants, conveys a sense of life and energy
that is immediately apparent. A city with a venerable past, 5,000 years ago
Beirut was a prosperous town on the Canaanite and Phoenician coast. The city is
recovering very quickly from the ravages of the civil war. You will find some
areas where old buildings have been knocked down to reveal parts of Roman
columns and new excavations have begun. The city retains its charm, and many of
the beautiful old buildings are being restored to their former glory.
Staying at Le Meridien, Commodore (or Le Grey, Four Seasons or
Movenpick) in central Beirut this
short break in the vibrant city has 3 full days at leisure when a range of day
trips can be booked.
This offer includes international flights with Middle East
Airlines, private return airport transfers and 4 nights B&B accommodation in a
Le Meridien, Commodore.
Lebanon is a very small country that’s packed with impressive Roman remains,
beautiful vineyards, quiet fishing villages and soaring mountains. Most of the
country’s sites can be seen easily from the buzzing city of Beirut which, only
four hours’ flight from London, also makes a great short break destination.
The main draw for tourists are the extensive Roman remains of Heliopolis, one of
the wonders of the ancient world, at Baalbek. These were among the largest Roman
temples ever built, and some of the best-preserved. The beautiful fishing
village of Byblos is home to a crusader castle and some pretty souks. Here, it
is possible to sit and watch the world go by over a seafood lunch at Pepe’s bar,
which was popular with Bridget Bardot and the Mediterranean jetset in the 1960s.
