Libya is a land of magnificent and unsurpassed ancient sites
located in wide open rural landscapes or right on the shores of the
Mediterranean Sea, where the gentle waves appear to lap over the ruins
themselves. Although gaining in popularity, Libya still has the advantage of
being beyond the masses and so in addition to the sheer quality of the sites
themselves there is the added bonus of peace and solitude in which to marvel.
This tour spends some time in the capital, Tripoli with the rest
of the itinerary divided between Tripolitania in the west and ancient Cyrenaica
in the East. The crucial link between Carthage and Alexandria ran right through
today’s Libya, the importance and grandeur of the monuments and sites is a
recognition of the country’s important rank within the Empire. A shorter tour,
based solely in Tripoli is also available – see opposite page.

Itinerary...
Day 1 - We fly from
London to Tripoli and transfer to the centrally located 3* Hotel El Khan, a
small traditional hotel in the heart of the city’s medina, where we stay for two
nights.
Day 2 - We begin our exploration of Tripoli with a walk through the sprawling
medina and souk to the Triumphal Arch of Marcus Aurelius before visiting the
Jamahiriya Museum with its stunning collection of statues. Later there will be
some free time for independent exploration.
Day 3 - Today we head for Sabratha, an important Carthaginian trading post
overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. We spend the day visiting the most important
monuments on the site including the Temple of Isis and the Forum. We return to
Tripoli airport and fly to Benghazi where we stay for one night at the 3* Hotel
Ouzo.
Day 4 - We take a lovely drive along the fertile coastal strip to Tolmeitha.
Walking across this ancient site with its huge cistern, one can easily imagine
how life must have been in the city’s heyday. We continue to Apollonia where we
spend two nights at the 3* Hotel Manara right by the sea.
Day 5 - Apollonia is a romantic site where the ruins lead up to the water’s
edge. After time walking around the ruins we go to the Arcadian landscape in the
mountains of Cyrene where we find the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Agora and the
Temple of Zeus - all surrounded by wooded valleys.
Day 6 - We return to Benghazi today stopping en-route at Lathrun and Qasr Libya
to see two basilicas adorned by mosaics from the early-Christian era. We stay
the night at the 3* Hotel Ouzo.
Day 7 - This morning we fly back to Tripoli and drive to Al Khums, close to
Leptis Magna where we stay for one night at the 3* Hotel Septimus.
Day 8 - We spend a full day exploring Leptis Magna, one of the greatest sites in
the ancient world - highlights include the Forum of Septimus Serverius, the
Hadrianic Baths and the Triumphal Arch. We then visit the nearby Villa Sillin
(subject to availability) to see the superbly preserved frescoes and mosaics,
which were discovered in the sand dunes some thirty years ago, before returning
to Tripoli for our final night at the 3* Hotel El Khan.
Day 9 - After some free time this morning we drive to the airport for the flight
back to London.
