About Madeira Only 32 miles long and 12 miles wide this incredibly beautiful sub-tropical island rises to almost 6000 feet at its highest point. Lush green unspoiled countryside, terraced farms and vineyards vie with spectacular mountains, pine forests, waterfalls and craggy cliffs. Flora in abundance – orchids, hydrangeas, hibiscus, no wonder Madeira is called the Floating Garden. There are 600 miles of walks, some are quite challenging and walking shoes would prove useful. Watersports abound (subject to weather) with scuba diving, deep sea fishing and sailing (dinghies). Sea bathing is quite safe and there is a Lido on the outskirts of Funchal. It is useful to know that the north coast is 2°-3° cooler. The Madeira Golf and Country Club at Santo da Serra, 15 miles from Funchal, was the venue for the first leg of the Volvo European Tour eleven years ago. Currently there are 18 holes with a further 9. A second continuous 18 hole course was opened in October ’93 at the stunningly beautiful Palheiro Golf. We have full details on both courses. Four of our hotels were founder members of Palheiro Golf Course and as such are able to offer guaranteed start times, 30% reduction on green fees (payable locally) and courtesy transport to the golf course (subject to availability). In the evenings life continues apace. There are hundreds of restaurants from the first class to the family business where service excels. Lots of island dishes, in particular the fresh Atlantic fish, are delicious, do sample the ‘espetada’ – beef cooked over a fire of laurel and served on a skewer. There is a selection of night clubs and discos. A hired car gives you so much freedom and adds an extra dimension to any holiday, but particularly in Madeira as some of the greatest pleasures are to be found in the countryside. We would be delighted to quote you prices, including baby seats and roof racks if required. Quintas of Madeira According to the Portuguese Dictionary, a Quinta is both an urban and rustic property covering either a large or small area, with its total perimeter walled, or at least a considerable part of it. A Quinta will always include a first class residence which is surrounded by gardens and shaded walkways with overhanging trees. This explanation is as varied as the Quintas themselves, but all have lovely “houses” in beautiful grounds. Our selected Quintas are now hotels of character many of which were once family homes of some standing with working estate lands owned by the island’s former aristocracy. Many are located on the outskirts of Funchal or in smaller villages 10-15 minutes from town. Each has the particular charm of traditional buildings and furnishings of comfort, style and quality. Of course we have only selected those with the ambience and service levels we expect for our clients. We hope that you will look through and find something to suit you. Porto Santo Porto Santo is only 16 square miles and really is an ‘away from it all’ island. Its prime attraction is some 51⁄2 miles of sandy beach and a brand new 18 hole golf course. If you are not a lover of ‘night life’ and prefer a quieter holiday – then Porto Santo is for you. Our holidays here are based on flights via Funchal, though there is a ferry service between the islands. We also arrange two-centre holidays with Madeira on request. We can advise you on hotels, fly/drive, eating out, sports, walking, night life, we have the answers to most questions and can find the ones we don’t have. call us on 0845 003 2211 or 01543 258631 |
