Itinerary... Day 2 Muscat: City tour, including the Grand Mosque and the Omani Museum. In Old Muscat, see the Sultan’s Palace and the forts of Al Jalali and Mirani before driving to Muttrah souq. (B) Day 3 Rustaq & Nakhl: Full day tour to the castles of Rastaq and Nakhl, which lie to the east of Muscat and guard the base of the massive Jebal Al Akhdar mountain range (B, L) Day 4 To Nizwa: Drive through the Sumail Gap to the interior of Oman. This afternoon, visit the Al Hoota cave complex. In Nizwa, stay 2 nights at the Falaj Daris Hotel / Golden Tulip Hotel. (B) Day 5 Nizwa: Morning visit to the souq to view a traditional cattle auction. Continue to the massive fort of Nizwa, which dominates the town. Visit Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Jabrin Fort, a former retreat of the Imam, now superbly restored. (B, L) Day 6 To Sur: Set off this morning for the Wahiba Sands, home to the Bedu people. Continue through Wadi Bani Khalid, a picturesque river valley, before arriving in Sur. Overnight at the Sur Plaza / Sur Beach Hotel. (B,L) Day 7 To Muscat: Sur was a hub for trade with Zanzibar, India and China, and the dhows that carried this trade are still built in the shipyard visited this morning. Continue along the coastal road to Muscat via Qalhat, an ancient city visited by Marco Polo, and Wadi Shab, a palm-fringed lagoon. In Muscat, transfer to the Muscat Holiday Inn. Late evening departure for the airport. (B, L) Day 8 To London: Very early morning flight from Muscat to London, via Abu Dhabi, with British Airways. (N) Note: Transport for this tour will be by air-conditioned mini bus and by 4 x 4 vehicle from day 4 onwards. Hotels outside Muscat are basic but are the best available. Independent Tours: In addition to the Escorted Group departures, this itinerary may be taken at any time as a Private Journey, subject to availability.
