The Macerata Opera Festival is held annually in the historic town of Macerata in the relatively little-known Marches region of eastern Italy. Performances are given in the unusual Arena Sferisterio, an impressive outdoor venue with superb acoustic. Le Marche is a charming, unspoilt region that remains remarkably unexplored. It is located on the Adriatic, surrounded by more fashionable neighbours including Umbria and Tuscany and is a province of rolling farmland, countless hill towns and important art galleries. The Venetian artists Lorenzo Lotto and Carlo Crivelli had strong associations with Le Marche and a number of their works remain there to be discovered. This is an area where even the smallest town has a gallery of some importance. Tour Itinerary 31st July - We fly from London to Bologna and transfer to the Recanati where we stay for 6 nights at the Hotel La Ginestra. Three dinners will be included during the stay here. On opera evenings we shall make the short 30 minute drive to Macerata and arrive in good time to explore the town and to have a leisurely dinner before the opera.1st August -Today there is a walking tour of Recanati and a visit to the Villa Coloredo-Mels with its Lorenzo Lotto paintings. The legendary singer, Beniamino Gigli was born in Recanti and we will visit the museum dedicated to the great man’s life and work. 2nd August - We drive to Loreto, an important pilgrimage centre where more Lotto’s can be found at the town’s gallery. 3rd August - The day is spent in the hill town of Urbino, considered by many to be the most perfect example of the idealised Renaissance city. We will visit the Palazzo Ducale, now an important art gallery, the house where Raphael was born in 1483 and the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista with its vivid frescoes depicting the life of John the Baptist. 4th August - We go to Ascoli Piceno today where the coolly elegant Piazza del Popolo is considered by many to be the finest in Italy. 5th August - A series of ineffably charming small hill towns, so characteristic of the region are on the itinerary today. We will go to Tolentino and Camerino and take in the stunning views from ‘the Balcony of the Marches’. 6th August - We return to Bologna and the flight back to London. Opera Festival Performances... The tour includes tickets for three operas: Maria Stuarda by Donizetti - This is one of Donizetti's most dramatic operas and tells the story of the two feuding Queens, Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots. Based on the play by Schiller, the opera contains a fictional meeting between the two Queens at Fotheringhay. It inspires Donizetti to write some blazing music for the scene when Mary and Elisabeth trade insults. When Mary calls Elizabeth ‘vil bastarda’ she signs her own death warrant but not before putting up a spirited fight. Norma by Bellini - Norma is the pinnacle of bel-canto opera; its sublime music spinning its magic on the audience. Norma is one of the most demanding roles for a soprano who must sing absolutely beautifully, display great coloratura and yet be able to command the stage with her presence. No wonder Norma is so seldom performed. Macbeth by Verdi - Verdi's adaptation of Shakespeare's play adds great drama to an already powerful story. As the evil couple carry out and then conceal their dastardly deeds,Verdi matches Shakespeare line-forline culminating in the great sleep-walking scene as Lady Macbeth loses her mind and leaves her weak and pitiful husband to his fate Hotel La Ginestra*** - A charming, family-run hotel located in the delightful small town of Recanati.
