Breaks...Opera & Music main menu - 0845 003 2211 or 01543 258631 During the summer months, the vast Arena di Verona welcomes hundreds of thousands of people for the annual Opera Festival. There is really nowhere quite like it, a heady combination of spectacle, anticipation, colour and music. The roster of the singers who have appeared at the Arena over the last century is quite astonishing and today the tradition of great voices continues. It takes a very special singer to perform in front of this vast audience of thousands, on a wide open stage without amplification. Different operas are performed each season but Verdi’s Aida is always in the programme, the sheer scale of the performing space being perfect for this most spectacular of all grand opera. The magic almost always seem to work, with the audience, very many of them new to opera, enthralled right up to the final bars, often in the early hours with a warm breeze still fluttering through the packed arena. Gripped by the action and drama as Aida descends into her tomb, Carmen and Don Jose have their final and tragic confrontation, Tosca betrayed, hurls herself from the ramparts and Tonio confronts the audience with the news that ‘the play is over’, the silence is broken by the roars of Bravos at the end of another night - gripping stuff!
