Few places offer a more exciting range of winter
activities than Kirkenes. It’s situation close to the Russian border and the
start of the great Siberian Taiga forest adds a new dimension to husky and
snowmobile safaris. At the edge of the Barents Sea, Kirkenes also offers the
unique King Crab Safari – an excursion you definitely should not miss! With its
own Snow Hotel and interesting cultural history, Kirkenes has something for
everyone. Easily accessible by air, via Oslo, or on the Hurtigruten (Coastal
Voyage), Kirkenes offers a variety of holidays options.
Our 3-night action-packed Adventure Break includes the three most popular excursions – King Crab Safari, evening snowmobile safari and full-day husky safari on the Norwegian- Russian border. It also offers the option of spending the last night in the Snow Hotel. Extra nights can be added, and excursions re-arranged if you wish to enjoy a longerbreak. There are many other excursion options including snow-shoetrekking, day-trips and overnight tours into Russia, and a longer husky safari with an overnight in a wilderness camp. Shorter husky trips, and daytime visits to the Snow Hotel and Gabba Reindeer Park are also possible. In Christmas week, it is even possible to meet Santa Claus! In short we can arrange practically anything-except of course, the Northern Lights! However Kirkenes offers very good possibilities of seeing them – and the longer you stay the better the chances. 3 night break from £1195 per person Kirkenes Snow Hotel Due to open on 7 January, the Snow Hotel will feature a Snow bar, chapel and 20 beautifully-decorated Snow Suites with comfortable beds and Arctic sleeping bags. A service building with sauna, showers and toilets is close by, as is the cosy restaurant. The Snow Hotel is located in the Gabba Reindeer Park, about half a mile from the Rica Hotel.

Day-trip to Russia Mons, Weds and Suns 08.00-18.00Day-trip to the frontier towns of Nikel and Zapolyarnyj. Frontier history, multi-cultural history, World War II and Russia past and present. Visit a monastery and a Russian market, with lunch included and time for shopping. Visa required. Price: £135 Adult/£70 Child under 12yrs Husky Safari with overnight in wilderness Daily except 24 & 25/12. 10.00-16.30 next day. Drive your own husky team along the Norwegian/Russian borderland and into the forest to a cosy cabin and have lunch around an open fireplace. The night will be spent in the cabin where you will have dinner and breakfast – and a sauna if you wish. Next day you return to the valley’s largest kennel before transferring back to your hotel. NB There is no running water or electricity in the cabin. Price £295 Adult/£140 Child under 12yrs Visit to Snow Hotel and Reindeer Park Daily 10.00-11.30 and 14.00-15.30 By kick-sled from hotel to visit the Snow Hotel and see the reindeer. Great photographic possibilities. Coffee/tea served. Price: £30 Adult/£20 Child under 12yrs Evening Snowmobile Safari (included in K4) Daily 18.00-21.00 A safari into the mountains between Finland and Russia. In good weather it is possible to see the Russian town of Nikel – or maybe even the Northern Lights! Coffee and reindeer meat during trip. Price: Sharing snowmobile £140 per person Own snowmobile £180 per person Snowshoe Trip Daily – usually 13.00-15.00 but other times may be possible. A guided walk of about two kilometres, with a refreshment stop en-route, and a chance to take some memorable pictures. Price £80pp A similar trip – In search of Northern Lights is operated at 20.30, but only when skies are clear, so local booking is advised. How to book...
