Combine the attractions of Oslo and Bergen with one of the world’s most spectacular rail journeys. The scenery gets ever more dramatic as you head for the fjords, and you will marvel not just at the nature, but also at the engineering skills that have made this incredible journey possible. If time permits you can break your journey at Voss, or change trains at Myrdal, take the mountain railway down to Flam, then take the Express Boat to Balestrand (see page 12). After a couple of days beside the Sognfjord you continue to Bergen on the Express Boat.
Extra nights can be added in any centre, and would definitely be worthwhile. It is also possible to combine Voss and Balestrand, or add a tour ‘Over the Roof of Norway’ to the Coastal Voyage and other holidays.An attractive lakeside village, about 90 minutes from Bergen,
and mid-way between the Sognfjord and the Hardangerfjord. There are many
excursion possibilities to both fjords including the popular ‘Norway in a
Nutshell’ tour. Take the cable-car to the top of Mount Hangur for superb views
and pleasant mountain walks.
Take a gentle stroll beside the lake, or to the spectacular gorge nearby. In fact Voss makes an excellent base for a walking holiday. Other activities on offer include cycling, horseriding, fly-fishing, para-gliding, white-water rafting and sea-plane trips over the glacier.
Fleischers Hotel, Voss A traditional family-owned hotel of great charm, beside the station and overlooking the lake. Facilities include a beautiful restaurant, spacious lounges and terrace with panoramic views, bar, indoor swimming-pool, sauna, solarium, billiards and table-tennis. All bedrooms have private facilities, T.V., telephone, mini-bar and hair-dryer. HALF-BOARD IS INCLUDED. Deluxe lake view rooms are available at a supplement of £40 per room per night. The ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ excursion, and buses to Ulvik and the Hardangerfjord depart from just outside the hotel.
Norway in a Nutshell- The popular ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ excursion departs daily from Bergen. You travel by train to Voss then join a coach for the descent into the spectacular Stalheim Gorge to Gudvangen. From here you take a boat-trip on the beautiful Næroyfjord to Flam. There you have time to relax before joining the Flam Mountain Railway for the scenic ascent to Myrdal, from which you return on the main line to Voss and Bergen. The tour is also possible in reverse. Tickets can be bought at Tourist Offices and stations, or the tour can be pre-booked at a cost of £90 per person from Bergen or £65 per person from Voss.
