A beautiful city at any time of year, Tromsø is especially attractive in winter – not least for the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. Some 200 miles above the Arctic Circle, it has been the departure point for countless polar expeditions. Fascinating museums bear witness to some of these exploits, and also offer an insight into the local Sami culture. Other attractions include the stunning Arctic Cathedral, picturesque wooden houses, quaint shops, cosy bars and cafés, plus a wide range of excellent restaurants.

Husky safaris are available in the daytime, or the evening (price £125pp including transfers, clothing and lunch/dinner). Other activities, which are all bookable locally, include horse-drawn sleigh rides, snow-shoe trips, snowmobile tours, ice-fishing, crosscountry ski-ing and guided nature tours. In the evening there are excursions to look for the Northern Lights at a number of locations including the husky centre. Another popular choice is to take an afternoon bus through the spectacular Lyngen Alps, and return to Tromsø on the southbound Coastal Voyage (daily except Saturday's., cost about £35pp.)

Tromsø and Hurtigruten Coastal Experience...

A very popular winter tour! Four nights above the Arctic Circle with the chance of Northern Lights – including a night aboard one of the splendid Coastal Voyage (Hurtigruten) ships. This is a perfect vantage point for Northern Lights, and an opportunity to enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery and visit a number of fascinating ports along the way. You may, of course, add extra nights in Tromsø, break your cruise in the Lofoten Islands, or add this tour to the Killer Whale Safari, Ice Hotel or other destinations in north Norway. Alternatively you could opt for a longer cruise starting in Trondheim or even Bergen. Details on request.

DAY 1. Depart Heathrow at 10.20 and fly via Oslo to Bodø.
Bed and Breakfast – Radisson SAS Hotel, Bodø.

DAY 2. Morning at leisure in Bodø. 15.00. Depart on Coastal Ship heading for the Lofoten Islands where the ship calls at Stamsund and Svolvær in the evening. A twin-bedded outside cabin with private facilities is included.
Overnight on Coastal Voyage.

DAY 3. During the early hours the ship calls at various ports in the Vesteralen Islands, then travels along the coast to Tromsø arriving at 14.30.
2 nights Bed and Breakfast – Radisson SAS Hotel, Tromsø.

DAY 4. At leisure in Tromsø.

DAY 5. Early afternoon homeward
