TUNISIA: FROM CARTHAGE TO KAIROUAN - Private tour In its long and eventful history, Tunisia has been occupied by Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. Now the country is home to some of the Middle East's most impressive ruins, including eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This tour includes many of the country's most famous archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Carthage, steeped in legend the vast amphitheatre of El Djem the fascinating underground villas of Bulla Regia and the holy city of Kairouan. Itinerary... Day 1 To Tunis: Fly from London Gatwick to Tunis with British Airways. Transfer to the Africa Al Mouradi Hotel for a 4 night stay. (N) Day 2 Tunis: Morning walking tour of old Tunis. This afternoon, visit the Bardo Museum, which contains a fine collection of artefacts spanning the history of Tunisia, including Roman and Byzantine mosaics from sites all over the country. (B) Day 3 Carthage & Sidi Bou Said: Morning excursion to the Punic and Roman ruins at Carthage. Continue to the beautiful ‘blue and white’ village of Sidi Bou Said, which occupies a stunning location overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and is known for the colour of its buildings. (B, L) Day 4 Bulla Regia & Dougga: Morning drive to Bulla Regia on the slopes of Jebel Regia, the site of underground Roman townhouses and some excellent mosaics. Continue to Dougga, one of the best-preserved Roman towns in North Africa, and visit the dominating temple set on the edge of the Teboursouk Mountains. (B) Day 5 To Kairouan: Morning drive to Sousse to visit the Great Mosque and the Ribat. Continue to Monastir to see the Bourguiba Mosque and the Ribat, a fortress and monastery built in the 8th century and now home to a museum of Islamic art. Drive to El Djem to visit North Africa's most impressive amphitheatre, a museum of mosaics and a reconstructed Roman townhouse. Drive to the old walled city of Kairouan, the magnificent early Islamic religious and cultural centre, and stay 2 nights at La Kasbah Hotel. (B) Day 6 Kairouan & Sbeitla: Morning tour of the Great Mosque of Sidi Uqba, the Mosque of the Barber and the Aghlabid Pools. Afternoon drive to Sbeitla to explore the Roman city and its stunning three-temple forum. (B) Day 7 To Tunis: Morning visit to the extensive site of Thuburbo Majus, with its Temple of Jupiter and two splendid bathhouses. Continue to Tunis and stay overnight at Karthago Le Palace. (B) Day 8 To London: Transfer to the airport and fly from Tunis to London Gatwick with British Airways. (B)
