Set on the Silk Road, Uzbekistan has played host to waves of conquerors and nomads. The legacy they left behind can be seen in the towering fortresses of Khiva and Bukhara, and the Islamic architecture of Samarkand.

2013 itinerary...

Day 1 – To Tashkent: Fly overnight from London to Tashkent with Uzbekistan Airways. (N)

Day 2 – Tashkent: Arrive in Tashkent and transfer to the Tashkent Palace Hotel or similar for 1 night (including immediate occupancy). Afternoon tour of the old city, Revolution Square, the Museum of Decorative and Applied Art, the bazaar and Kukeldash mosque and madrasa. (D)

Day 3 – To Khiva: Transfer to the airport and take a morning flight to Urgench. Visit the ancient fortresses of Ayaz Kala and Toprak Kala before an afternoon drive to Khiva via Ulli Khovli. Stay at the Malika Hotel or similar for 2 nights. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Khiva: Full-day tour of Khiva. (B, D)

Day 5 – To Bukhara: Full-day drive to Bukhara. Stay for 3 nights at Zargaron Plaza or similar. (B, L, D)

Day 6 – Bukhara: Full-day tour of Bukhara, including the Ark fortress, the great Kalyan minaret, the Samanid mausoleum and the Bukhara crafts centre. (B, D)

Day 7 – Bukhara: Morning excursion to the Summer Palace and shrine of Khoja Bakhautdin Naqshbandi. (B, D)

Day 8 – To Samarkand: Drive to Samarkand via Gidjuvan, site of one of the finest ceramic productions in the Bukhara region. Stay for 3 nights at the Grand Samarkand Hotel or similar. (B, D)

Day 9 – Samarkand: Full-day tour of Samarkand, including visits to Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, the Bibi Khanum mosque and the tomb of Tamerlane, the most influential central Asian military leader of the middle ages. (B, D)

Day 10 – Samarkand: Full-day tour of Shahrisabz, surrounded by the foothills of the Pamir mountains, where Tamerlane built a large summer palace. (B, L, D)

Day 11 – To Tashkent by train: A morning visit to Gur Emir, the mausoleum of Tamerlane, then transfer to the station for a two-and-ahalf- hour journey aboard the Sharq train from Samarkand to Tashkent. The afternoon is free to explore Tashkent. Stay overnight at the Tashkent Palace Hotel or similar. (B, D)

Day 12 – To London: Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the airport. Fly from Tashkent to London with Uzbekistan Airways. (B)
Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan: Having completed a tour of Uzbekistan, it is possible to travel to one of the surrounding countries as part of a tailor-made extension. Please contact us for details.

Please note: Outside Tashkent the standard is basic. This tour involves some long drives and walking over rough terrain.

Explore the cultural heartland of Uzbekistan with visits to some of the major towns in the Fergana valley. Highlights include the vibrant local market in Andijan and the Yodgorlik silk factory in Margilan, which still uses the traditional methods of silk production that date back to the days of the Silk Road caravans.

Day 12 – To Fergana Valley: Drive to the Fergana region of Uzbekistan, visiting the ancient city of Kokand en route. Stay 2 nights at the Asia Hotel or similar. (B, D)
Day 13 – Fergana Valley: Full-day tour of the region, including of Andijan and Fergana. (B, D)
Day 14 – To Tashkent: Morning at leisure. Return to Tashkent this afternoon and stay at the Tashkent Palace Hotel or similar for 1 night. (B)
Day 15 – To London: Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the airport.
