Day
1. Depart London
Depart from London bound for
Sept Iles, flying via Montreal. Spend 1 night at the Hotel
Gouveneur.Days 2 to 8.
Longue Pointe de Mingan [B, L, D]
Transfer to the Hotel de la Minganie at Longue Pointe de
Mingan, where you will be based for 7 nights. Your days will
be spent observing and contributing to the study of Blue
Whales, which can be found in high concentrations in the
Mingan area and just off the coast of Sept-Iles, between
August and September. From 7 metre rigid-hulled inflatable
boats, you will have the chance to join biologists at sea
participating in field research and assisting in the
collection of data, often spending 6-10 hours on the water.
Researchers on board will provide information about the
ecology of the whales and also how to identify individual
whales by their characteristic markings. Although much of
your time is spent specialising in Blue Whale research,
Harbour Porpoises, Atlantic White-sided and White-beaked
Dolphins, Harp, and Grey Seals may also be seen, providing
you with a most unique wildlife experience. The wildlife
sanctuary of the Mingan archipelago, now designated a
National Park, lies within 5 kilometres of the Quebec south
coast. These islands are renowned for their distinctive
limestone rock formations carved by ice and sea and provide
a home to numerous sea birds and seals, including Atlantic
Puffins, Arctic Terns, Eider Ducks and razorbills.
